Roots

“Roots” is an ongoing exploration into the wonder and design of seemingly common plants. There is a depth of beauty and awe that reside beneath the surface of our everyday lives, waiting for the joy of discovery.

This series has become a weekly treasure hunt; searching out local plants, unearthing their incredible root systems, and using my pen to study every unique contour. Throughout my scavenging, I have discovered a fortune of root systems that amaze and often greatly surprise me. Many of these “weeds” contain an abundance of health and medicinal benefits.

“Roots” merges themes of strength and delicacy, the wondrous clothed in common camouflage, and sweet simplicity with intriguing complexity. My painting process grows from a place of both unpredictability and thoughtful design. I enjoy the excitement and fluidity of swirling a pallet knife on canvas, as well as the detailed mark-making and investigation with my pen. I am learning to embrace imperfection as I draw with the finality of ink, instead of pencil. This process truly allows the drawing to flow from a place of raw observation.

There is a harvest of delight for the soul as we slow down, listen, and engage in the ongoing melodies that springs up around our very feet.
